A simple DNA test can predict whether someone will be more likely to lose weight on a low-fat or low carbohydrate diet, U.S. researchers said.
Results from a small initial study of 101 women showed their best diet for the genes they have lost two to three times more weight than others. The results were presented at the American Heart Association conference.
The emerging field of "nutrigenomics" to see how foods interact with genes. Has long been known that people react to certain nutrients differ according to genetic.
Lactose intolerance, for example, is more common among Asian and African people than the people of Northern European descent. This study to see how people fared better with a different gene in the various weight-loss diet.
The researchers, from Stanford University, analyzed data from 101 white Caucasian woman who provided a DNA swab from their cheek cells. The women had a different diet for a year, very low-carbohydrate diet, low carbohydrate / high protein, and low or very low in fat.
The researchers divided the group into three genotypes which they described as a low carbohydrate responsive, responsive, low-fat diet and a balanced diet responsive genotype, they found that people who fit genotype diet they lose more weight 2-3 times more than 12 months compared with the people on the "wrong" diet.
The researchers said their findings are preliminary, and need more confirmation before they can be used commercially.
